Managing Millennials

The millennial generation, also known as Generation Y, grew up during the evolution of technology. As such, they are the last batch to experience growing up with analog devices. They were quick to learn the ins and outs of digital technology and adapted the use of these gadgets in their everyday lives.

 Millennials are leaders in the tech know-how in the workplace. The innovative environment they grew up in influenced the way they work and think, which they proudly exhibit in the workplace. Their different perspective can be a breath of fresh air and should not be feared.

  1. Create Strong Company Culture – Millennials want their works to have meaning and purpose. When they see the relevant of what they do, they will dedicate their blood, sweat and tears to help the company grow

  2. Offer a Work-Life Balance – Millennials crave flexibility in the workplace that enables them to experience the world, spend time with their families and friends and achieve multiple goals. Offer flexible hours and remote working opportunities to appeal to this generation and other generations.

  3. Provide Leadership and Guidance – Be mentors, not bosses. As a results-orientated generation, you do not need to micromanage millennials. Show them what needs to be achieved and let them get the results their own way

  4. Take Advantage of Their Tech Savviness – Instead of prohibiting them to use their smartphones and personal devices, let the use them for work. Not only will it help boost their performance, but it will also show them that you trust them

  5. Recognise Their Work – Millennials do not want trophies – they was validation, recognition and reinforcement. A simple ‘thank you’ or ‘great job’ will go a long way

  6. Craft a Future That Gets Them Excited – Lay out their future in the company and talk about their career path more frequently. Make them excited about what they can achieve within the organisation, but do not make empty promises – act on it and be transparent;

  7. Encourage Collaboration – Hold weekly team meetings or brainstorming sessions to encourage collaboration. You can even mentor and coach millennials as a team;

  8. Allow Them to be Leaders – Trust their abilities and allow them to take on bigger, more meaningful projects. Do not squash them or hold them back. Give them the reigns and they will become high performers;
